On August 23, 2024, Thai government officials, including Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce), Mr. Vuttikrai Leewiraphan (Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce), and Mr. Arwut Wongsawas (Deputy Director General, Department of Intellectual Property), led the destruction of over 1.2 million counterfeit items valued at 325 million THB (approx. 9.57 million USD). This event highlights Thailand’s dedication to protecting intellectual property rights, ensuring consumer safety, and boosting investor confidence.
S&O IP was honored to be invited as a key participant in this significant ceremony, which demonstrates the government’s strict enforcement against IP violations, both online and offline. Destruction Ceremony serves as a crucial mechanism for addressing intellectual property violations, ensuring transparency under WTO obligations, adhering to environmental standards, and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The destruction of counterfeit goods, including fashion, electronics, and cosmetics, was conducted under proper procedures to prevent re-entry into the market and to raise public awareness of the health risks and legal implications of counterfeits.
Despite recognition in the 2024 Special 301 Report (which evaluates the protection and enforcement of IPR in various countries around the world), Thailand remains on the Watch List. The Thai government is committed to intensifying efforts to be removed from this list. Public cooperation is crucial in combating IP violations, and citizens are encouraged to report any infringements.
S&O IP remains committed to safeguarding intellectual property rights and working closely with authorities to protect inventors and uphold the law.
