On June 13, 2024, the "Briefing on IP Development in Shanghai" event was convened, organized jointly by the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration and the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The event brought together representatives from foreign chambers of commerce, foreign investment associations, enterprises, universities, and other organizations.
Deputy Director Yu Cheng of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration outlined Shanghai's recent achievements and future IP strategies during the event. He emphasized the city's commitment to enhancing its IP governance capacity and optimizing its IP protection system in the coming year.
In recent years, Shanghai has made significant strides in becoming one of the global leaders in IP protection. The city has focused on implementing its strategy as an IP-strong city, providing robust support for enterprises, including foreign-funded businesses. Last year, Shanghai achieved notable increases in valid invention patents, PCT international patent applications, and local patent filings. The city also hosted the 20th Shanghai International IP Forum and strengthened collaborations with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Additionally, Shanghai made its inaugural appearance at the 64th General Assembly of WIPO, underscoring its proactive stance on international IP cooperation. To further strengthen its IP protection framework, Shanghai authorities issued a series of normative policy documents, addressing areas such as pharmaceutical procurement, support for small and medium-sized enterprises in IP matters, geographical indications, and IP assessment practices. These efforts aim to solidify Shanghai's reputation as a premier intellectual property destination and foster sustainable innovation across diverse sectors.
