The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines reported record-high achievements for the Innovation and Technology Support Program (ITSO) in 2023, with a notable increase in intellectual property filings.
Last year, ITSO members — comprising higher education institutions, state universities and colleges, and other participants—filed 1,535 IP applications, a 47.6% increase from the previous year and surpassing the 2022 record.
Most of these filings (about 90%) were related to innovation, including patents, utility models, and industrial designs. Patents saw a 77% increase, utility models increased by 28%, and industrial design filings rose by 57%, showcasing a strong focus on advancing technology and creativity among ITSO members.
Director General Rowel S. Barba attributed this success to the IP Office capacity-building efforts and the growth of the ITSO network from 77 to 87 members in 2023.
Furthermore, IP commercialization increased significantly, with 39 ITSOs actively engaging in commercialization activities — a 50% increase from the previous year — resulting in 74 reported initiatives aimed at driving societal impact through IP.
The Philippines IP Office remains committed to empowering local innovators through the ITSO program, fostering collaboration, and promoting Philippine technologies globally. The recent 2024 ITSO President's Summit celebrated these achievements, recognizing top ITSO filers for their excellence and dedication to intellectual property.
