On August 1, 2023, the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia issued a notification regarding the filing of Trademark Registration Applications to reduce unnecessary documentation and improve efficiencies in the trademark registration process. The notification requires applicants to file one application for multi-classes trademarks instead of filing separate applications for the same mark across different classes.

Although multi-class applications will enable the registrar to improve the registration process, applicants may face the risk of mark rejection in all classes if one or more of the classes are refused and the other classes aren’t.  However, applicants can still address multi-class application rejections by abandoning the affected class and proceeding with the unaffected classes for registration.

This Cambodian Notification is yet another important development In Cambodia’s significant progress in improving its intellectual property processes.
