Georgia introduced important amendments to its trademark law, effective March 8, 2024. These amendments require trademark owners to review and update the lists of goods and services in their applications and registrations. This update aligns with a more literal interpretation of class headings and broad terms, providing clearer and more specific trademark specifications.

Owners are encouraged to make these updates within five years from the amendments’ implementation date, by March 7, 2029. This includes any requests related to transferring rights, registering licenses, renewing trademark registrations, or recording changes. The National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia (Sakpatenti) will ask owners to revise their trademark specifications to comply with the new requirements.

The official fee for filing amendments is approx. EUR 60. However, no fees will be charged for updates requested before March 7, 2025, offering a valuable opportunity for early action.

The adoption of the literal interpretation of class headings brings Georgia’s trademark law closer to international regulations, improving clarity in trademark specifications. Broad or general terms or class headings will now be interpreted literally, covering only the specific goods or services listed.
