The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently published its 2023 global intellectual property (IP) filing data, highlighting China's performance in innovation.
According to the report, China maintained its position as the top filer of international patent applications via the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) for the fifth consecutive year. This reflects China's ongoing commitment to fostering innovation and protecting intellectual property rights globally.
In trademarks, the United States led with the most applications, followed by Germany and China. Notably, China and South Korea were the only countries among the top ten to see an increase in applications, with China experiencing a 7.7% growth.
The Hague System saw a record number of international design applications in 2023, with China among the top contributors, along with Germany and the United States.
Chinese entities dominated both the enterprise and education sectors of PCT applicants. Fourteen Chinese enterprises ranked among the top 50, led by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., which filed 6,494 applications in 2023. Meanwhile, 12 Chinese universities are featured in the top 50 educational institutions.
China's surge in IP filings highlights its innovative capabilities and underscores the strategic importance of intellectual property rights in the global economy.
