On July 30, 2024, Ho Chi Minh City was the venue for the "Open Innovation and Invention Forum for the Development of Vietnam’s Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Sectors." This event was organized by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam (IP Vietnam) in collaboration with the Vietnam Invention Association and the University Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City. The forum drew over 200 participants, including industry leaders, academics, experts, and representatives from intellectual property firms and media outlets.

The forum aimed to foster an environment where experts and organizations could discuss policies that connect initiatives, solutions, products, and services, ultimately promoting innovation and invention in Vietnam’s pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.

Mr. Le Huy Anh, Deputy Director of IP Vietnam, emphasized the vital role of intellectual property in industry development. He stated, "Intellectual property is not just a tool for protecting inventors' rights but also a driving force for the growth of industries, including pharmaceuticals and biotechnology." He highlighted the importance of innovation and the pursuit of new solutions and technologies in improving lives, enhancing healthcare, protecting the environment, and contributing to the knowledge economy.

In the context of global scientific and technological advances, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a key tool in vaccine development, drug design, and the discovery of new materials. AI has the potential to ease the burden on hospitals, improve treatment outcomes, and address the shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in remote areas. However, protecting AI innovations under intellectual property law remains a global challenge, posing significant implications for future IP regulations in Vietnam.

The forum concluded with a call for unity, cooperation, and respect for intellectual property rights, all within the framework of open innovation. Participants left with valuable insights into the critical role of innovation and IP in the fast-evolving pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. To keep up with these developments, businesses, healthcare agencies, and IP Vietnam should take proactive steps to implement the strategies discussed, turning ideas into practical solutions that drive progress and tackle emerging challenges.
