The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has introduced new regulations and a registry specifically for well-known trademarks to improve brand protection and boost the country’s economic development. On May 5, 2025, IPOPHL Director General Brigitte M. da Costa-Villaluz stated that the initiative marks a significant shift toward greater respect for intellectual property rights, while also promoting national pride and economic transformation.

The new registry is designed to safeguard both domestic and international brands from misuse and infringement. It aims to foster fair competition and attract more investment into the country.

Under the new rules, any mark officially recognized as well-known by IPOPHL or a competent court will receive 10 years of protection. This protection is renewable every decade, provided there is evidence of continued commercial use. The standards for recognition follow the Intellectual Property Code of 1997.
