At the Business of IP (BIP) Asia Forum 2024, held on December 6, 2024, and organized by the Hong Kong Trade and Development Council, the Philippines showcased its strengthened initiatives in intellectual property (IP) commercialization. IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba emphasized that leveraging IP assets is essential for driving innovation and economic growth.
IPOPHL Director General introduced the Philippine Intellectual Property Strategy (PHIPS) 2025-2030, a roadmap designed to establish the Philippines as a global hub for creativity and innovation. The strategy integrates IP into value chains and explores emerging technologies like artificial intelligence to maximize economic impact.
He also highlighted key legislation, including the Philippine Innovation Act and the Innovative Startup Act, which empower IP owners. Further, IPOPHL’s initiatives—such as the Philippine International Copyright Summit and the Copyright Plus program—aim to support copyright-based industries and marginalized communities.
The forum recognized the Philippines’ growing role in the digital creative economy. Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSOs) reported a record 1,535 IP filings in 2023, marking a 50% increase in commercialization efforts.
BIP Asia is a yearly event that gathers international experts in intellectual property and business to discuss recent innovations and trends through panels, exhibits, and interactive workshops.
