As of February 9, 2024, Myanmar's Intellectual Property Department (IPD) is accepting now applications for copyright and related rights registration under the Copyright Law of 2019.
Effective from October 31, 2023, the Copyright Law of 2019 replaced the old Copyright Act of 1914. Procedures for copyright matters were outlined by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) through Notification No. 70/2023 on October 23, 2023. Necessary forms for registration and other actions were provided by the MOC under Notification No. 73/2023 on November 20, 2023. Notification No. 1/2024, issued by the IP Agency on February 13, 2024, detailed official fees.
Despite copyright protection being automatically granted without requiring registration, individuals in Myanmar have the option to voluntarily apply for registration of their works under the new framework of the Copyright Law of 2019, should they desire to enhance the evidence of ownership for their works. Applications can be submitted by the applicant electronically, in person, or through a local representative, as well as by post. For applicants outside Myanmar, it is mandatory to engage a local representative for filing the application with the IPD.
