In 2015, Kazakhstan and the European Union (EU) began negotiations to sign a protocol on protecting geographical indications (GIs) for agricultural products, foodstuffs, wines, and spirits. This initiative was part of a broader agreement to enhance the partnership and cooperation between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the EU.

On May 30th, 2024, Kazakhstan's Minister of Justice, Azamat Eskarayev, met with EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, to discuss the protocol. Azamat Eskalaev emphasized the country's strong interest in signing the protocol. He highlighted Kazakhstan's potential in developing geographical indications, which could boost exports for Kazakh agricultural producers and improve their access to the EU market. The EU praised the cooperation with Kazakhstan's Ministry of Justice and the progress made during the negotiations.

Geographical indications, a new aspect of intellectual property law in Kazakhstan was officially recognized in 2022. Promoting geographical indications in Kazakhstan will support the national branding of agricultural products from various regions, enhance their visibility on the global market, and foster investment and tourism growth.
