As reported by the China Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), the average examination time for invention patents in the country has been reduced to 15.6 months as of October 2024. This progress brings China closer to achieving its 2025 target of shortening patent reviews to 15 months. Comparatively, in 2023, the average examination period stood at 16 months.
Currently, China holds 4.66 million valid invention patents, maintaining its position as the first country to surpass the milestone of 4 million patents. This achievement underscores China's commitment to innovation, a position it has held since 2019 as the leading global source of international patent applications.
The accelerated patent approval process ensures that businesses can swiftly protect their inventions, minimizing the risk of infringement. Beyond domestic improvements, China also emphasizes international collaboration. Through partnerships with 33 countries and regions, including major economies like the United States, Germany, France, and Japan, China has implemented fast-track patent programs. These initiatives facilitate mutual recognition of examination results, significantly expediting the patent review process across borders.
