The Thai Customs Department held the Destruction Ceremony of infringing goods on July 17, 2024. The event was held alongside the Department of Intellectual Property and other representatives in Thailand, witnessing the destruction of 1,093,000 counterfeit goods infringing on multiple brand names.
Mr. Chulphan Amornvivat, the Deputy Minister of Finance, presided over the opening ceremony. He conveyed the Thai government's commitment, led by Prime Minister Mr. Srettha Thavisin and Minister of Finance Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, to combat the smuggling of goods that violate intellectual property rights. This policy aims to protect the Thai market and enhance the quality of life for Thai citizens. The counterfeit items included luxury bags, hats, shoes, blankets, clothing, accessories, and environmentally harmful products like fluorocarbon (FCs) refrigerants, electronic cigarettes, and cannabis, with a total value exceeding 39 million Thai baht.
Mr. Thirat Attanawanich, Director General of the Customs Department, instructed Customs officials to be vigilant in preventing and suppressing illegal importation. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with other authorities to ensure maximum efficiency and a unified approach. This event marks a significant step in addressing infringement issues and ensuring these products will not return to the market, demonstrating active cooperation between law enforcement, customs, and representatives in Thailand.
The Destruction Ceremony also explained the methods employed to dispose of counterfeit goods. Some items were crushed using an industrial crusher at the Nong Khaem Waste Disposal Centre. Meanwhile, products with environmental impacts, such as fluorocarbon (FCs) refrigerants and similar items, were incinerated using a Fluidized Bed incinerator at the Bang Pu Environmental Complex. This process was supervised by West Management Siam Company Limited and the Thai Customs Department.
