Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) is placing greater emphasis on the strategic use of Geographical Indications (GIs) to promote local products and enhance national branding. This initiative aims to transform region-specific goods, such as agricultural produce, textiles, and handicrafts, into valuable intellectual property assets that drive both economic growth and cultural recognition.
According to recent policy discussions, the DIP is developing long-term programs to help local producers obtain GI protection, improve quality control systems, and expand export opportunities. By leveraging the reputation and authenticity of origin-based products, Thailand seeks to strengthen consumer confidence and increase the global competitiveness of local industries.
This approach reflects Thailand’s broader IP strategy to integrate innovation, culture, and trade, positioning GIs not merely as legal protections, but as instruments for sustainable development and regional value creation.
