China continues its rise with nearly 5 million active domestic invention patents recorded as of May 2025. This milestone reflects not only a surge in inventive activity but also a maturing intellectual property ecosystem that supports industrial competitiveness and long-term economic growth.

The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) attributes this growth to recent reforms aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of patent examination. Efforts have included adapting review processes to the actual needs of innovators, prioritizing high-value applications, and accelerating processing times through centralized and fast-track mechanisms.

In the first five months of the year, CNIPA fast-tracked over 100,000 patent applications, carried out thousands of priority reviews, and introduced more flexibility in managing examination workflows. These strategies aim to ensure that truly impactful inventions reach the market faster, supporting both technological advancement and national industrial resilience.

Beyond speed, the agency is also sharpening its focus on service quality. With 77 national IP protection centers now operating across the country, applicants benefit from integrated, one-stop support, helping bridge the gap between innovation and commercialization.
