Vietnam: Record Number of Patent Applications in 2023

In 2023, Vietnam experienced a significant rise in patent applications, according to the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam (IP Vietnam). The office, operating under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), reported a total of over 156,000 applications for various industrial property rights, marking an 11% increase compared to the previous year.
Of these applications, 84,000 were for registering industrial property rights, while 71,660 were categorized as other types of applications and requests. Notably, patent applications increased by 10.6%, while industrial design applications saw a rise of 11.8%.
The IP Vietnam has diligently processed these applications, handling 125,778 of them, including 74,130 for registering industrial property rights, reflecting a 13.2% increase from the previous year.
The protection of intellectual property rights has become a prominent concern, not only in Vietnam but also globally. Luu Hoang Long, director of IP Vietnam, emphasized the growing importance of intellectual property in the country's economic and social development.
The surge in patent applications indicates Vietnam's commitment to innovation and the growth of its domestic industries. As intellectual property continues to play a pivotal role in Vietnam's development, efforts to safeguard and promote it are expected to remain a priority in the years to come.
