In early 2024, the Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan (Oliy Majlis) discussed amendments to Uzbekistan's legislation, aiming to boost the protection of intellectual property (IP) rights.
Specifically, they discussed the proposed changes to Article 12'1 of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On Informatization" in detail during the second reading. The primary focus of these amendments is to elevate the level of personal responsibility held by information owners, particularly in the realm of intellectual property rights. By enhancing the legal framework surrounding intellectual property, including copyrights and related rights, Uzbekistan aims to create a more robust environment for innovation and creativity.
These legislative adjustments are part of broader reforms aimed at bolstering property rights protection across various sectors, including intellectual property. The revised Article 53 of the Constitution underscores the significance of legal protections for intellectual property, guaranteeing freedom in scientific, technical, and artistic endeavors, as well as the utilization of cultural achievements.
These changes are expected to not only safeguard the rights of intellectual property owners but also enhance the country's international reputation and attractiveness to investors.
The draft law was successfully passed in the second reading by the deputies of the Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan.
