Thailand plans to add 22 new items to its Geographical Indication (GI) product list in 2025. The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) aims to boost the market value of GI products beyond THB 5.9 billion (approx. EUR 166.6 million), strengthening their role in the country’s agriculture and food industries.
DIP Director General Nusara Kanjanakul reported that GI products contributed over THB 77 billion (approx. EUR 2.2 billion) to Thailand’s economy in 2024, an increase of THB 20 billion (approx. EUR 564.6 million) from the previous year. She emphasized their importance in providing high-quality raw materials and supporting sustainable industry growth.
GI products also enhance Thailand’s global influence. Popular Thai GI goods, such as rice and coffee, are exported to over 30 countries, including the EU, Japan, and Malaysia. The Ministry of Commerce is working with major retailers to promote seasonal GI items and will feature them in Thai Select and Michelin-starred restaurants. To support producers, the government is helping farmers reduce costs, expand online sales, and improve packaging.
