Hong Kong has implemented a substantial reduction of up to 70% in design patent application fees, effective March 1, 2024, according to the Intellectual Property Department (IPD). According to Director David Wong, this initiative aims to incentivize businesses to register designs electronically, facilitating quicker legal protection for product innovations.

The move towards electronic filing not only promotes efficiency but also offers cost savings, with businesses potentially saving USD 30 per design compared to traditional paper filing methods. Additional fee reductions of 20% to 60% extend to various design services, including advertising fees and renewals.

Director Wong emphasizes the urgency of embracing electronic registration, supported by upgraded IT systems and streamlined workflows. By leveraging technology to enhance service standards, the Hong Kong IPD aims to empower businesses to safeguard their intellectual assets effectively, fostering innovation and creativity in the region.
