Starting January 15, 2024, inventors and enterprises in Georgia now have the opportunity to validate their applications for European patents and patents issued by the European Patent Office. This development is a result of the official enforcement of the validation agreement signed in 2019 between the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Georgian Patent Office. Georgia, by becoming the fifth country to enter into validation agreements with the EPO, has taken a significant step in advancing its national patent system and attracting foreign investment.
According to EPO President António Campinos, this validation agreement contributes to the expansion of accessibility and attractiveness of the European patent system. With the agreement now in force, various opportunities have emerged for the National Center for Intellectual Property of Georgia (SAKPATENTI):
- Reduced processing time and costs for applicants, along with a decrease in administrative burdens.
- Acquisition of high-quality patents that have undergone examination by highly qualified EPO experts.
- The ability for any European patent filed to secure patent protection in 45 territories.
