In 2023, Azerbaijan saw a rise in inventive activity, with the Intellectual Property Agency reporting an increase in patent applications. Compared to the previous year, there were 302 applications received, up from 271. Of these, 201 were for inventions, 67 for utility models, and 34 for industrial designs, marking an 11% surge in invention applications.

This increase can be attributed to streamlined examination processes and the adoption of modern electronic document management systems. Furthermore, there was a rise in trademark registrations, reaching 3,145 in 2023 compared to 2,927 in 2022. The country also witnessed a growth in applications for international trademark protection under the Madrid Agreement, showcasing better international involvement in intellectual property rights.

This uptick in inventive activity and trademark registrations signals positive growth not only for Azerbaijan but also for other countries in CIS. It underscores the increasing recognition of safeguarding intellectual property rights and nurturing innovation.
