Zhejiang province is setting a national benchmark in intellectual property (IP) development and enforcement, reinforcing its role as a key driver of China’s innovation economy. As of June 2025, the region boasts over 451,000 valid invention patents and 4.91 million registered trademarks, placing it at the forefront of IP activity across the country.
At a recent press briefing, provincial officials highlighted the expanding ecosystem supporting creators and enterprises. Zhejiang has launched 21 dedicated IP service centers, providing fast-track assistance for innovators seeking protection and resolution. On the legal front, courts are now prioritizing IP cases related to the digital economy, AI, algorithms, and big data, with punitive damages actively imposed to deter infringement.
From 2022 to mid-2025, over 111,000 IP lawsuits were handled at the first-instance level, with nearly 66% tied to digital sectors. In the same period, courts awarded CNY 517 million (approx. EUR 62.3 million) in punitive damages across 109 cases — underscoring the province’s commitment to IP enforcement.
Officials emphasize that private enterprises are central to Zhejiang’s innovation strategy, with invention patents held by these companies increasing 150% in just three years. Through online and offline outreach, the government is actively tuning into the IP needs of businesses to offer targeted support.
