Uzbekistan has taken a major step forward in reshaping its intellectual property landscape. The Senate recently passed a law introducing broad amendments to existing IP legislation, focused on simplifying processes and reinforcing legal protections for rights holders.

The reform aims to modernize the country’s patent and IP systems by embracing digital tools, reducing administrative complexity, and accelerating approval timelines. Among the most significant updates is a faster examination procedure for certain applications — now limited to just ten days in some cases — and the automatic issuance of industrial property patents via an electronic platform, eliminating previous procedural bottlenecks.

The law also removes outdated documentation requirements, easing the path for inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs to secure IP rights. Updates to fee payment mechanisms further reduce friction, making it more convenient to register and maintain patents and other IP assets.
At the same time, enforcement is being tightened. Stricter penalties for infringement signal a stronger commitment to defending the rights of innovators and deterring IP misuse. These changes support a healthier, more predictable innovation climate.

By aligning its IP framework with international best practices, Uzbekistan is clearly positioning itself as a more competitive and innovation-driven economy. The legislative changes reflect a broader push to promote entrepreneurship, attract investment, and foster respect for creative and scientific contributions in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
