Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property has implemented changes to the classification of goods and services following the adoption of the 13th edition of the Nice Classification. The update is based on a Notification of the Minister of Commerce dated November 14, 2025, and has applied to trademark applications filed or designated in Thailand from January 1, 2026.
Under the revised framework, several categories of goods have been reassigned to different Nice classes. Notably, products relating to eyeglasses and lenses have been moved from Class 9 to Class 10, rescue vehicles are now classified under Class 12 instead of Class 9, and electrically heated clothing has been transferred from Class 11 to Class 25. In addition to these headline changes, a number of other, more specific items have also been reclassified, requiring closer attention when preparing goods specifications.
The new classification rules apply only to applications filed or designated on or after January 1, 2026. At the same time, the Thai authorities have provided a grace period until January 31, 2026, during which goods may remain classified as originally filed. However, applicants should be aware that written explanations may still be requested if objections arise under the updated rules. In light of these changes, careful review of goods specifications prior to filing is recommended to minimise classification-related objections under the revised Thai practice.
