Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property, in cooperation with WIPO, has launched training aimed at helping local companies, universities, inventors, and IP practitioners better use the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system for international filings. The program highlights the advantage of submitting one international application instead of filing separately in multiple jurisdictions, allowing applicants to designate any of the 158 PCT member states, including major Thai export markets such as China, Japan, the United States, and the European Union, reducing administrative burden, saving time, and lowering initial costs.

A key focus of the initiative is the ePCT platform, which enables electronic submission, document exchange, and status tracking, and currently offers filing fee reductions of up to EUR 370. Since joining the PCT in 2009, Thai applicants have filed more than 1,100 international applications, and with more than 80% already filed through ePCT, the DIP aims to move toward full adoption and increase outbound patent activity to support competitiveness and global market access.
