At a recent international conference on intellectual property held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar underscored its commitment to strengthening its IP framework as a key driver of economic development. In his opening address, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chair of the State Administration Council, emphasized that a robust intellectual property system is essential for fostering innovation, advancing industrialization, and attracting foreign investment.

Positioning IP as a strategic component of the Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan, the government signaled its intent to integrate IP protections into broader economic policies. Strong IP enforcement, the senior general noted, not only safeguards the rights of creators but also encourages the growth of sustainable industries and enhances investor confidence in the country’s innovation ecosystem.

The conference brought together both local and international experts who shared insights on global best practices in IP management. Scholars presented research and real-world case studies focused on aligning Myanmar’s IP system with international norms, addressing current gaps, and identifying policy opportunities.

Discussions throughout the event centered on how a well-defined IP infrastructure can serve as a foundation for industrial growth, while also empowering local inventors and businesses to compete globally. As Myanmar moves toward building a more innovation-led economy, strengthening its IP regime is expected to play a pivotal role in enabling long-term, inclusive development and attracting high-quality investment
