On November 12, 2025, the Parliament of Georgia approved the final reading of the amendments to the Law of Georgia “On Design,” developed by the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia (Sakpatenti). The updated legislation aims to modernize Georgia’s design protection system and fully harmonize it with international standards.

The amendments introduce several key improvements, including clearer provisions on publication, grounds for refusal, re-examination, and invalidation of design registrations. A new re-examination mechanism allows interested parties to challenge designs directly before Sakpatenti, providing a faster and more efficient alternative to court proceedings. The reform also strengthens the powers of the Sakpatenti Chamber of Appeals and establishes a preliminary search service, enabling applicants to check whether a design is already protected in Georgia.

Prepared under the joint EUIPO–Sakpatenti EUGIPP project, the reform represents an important step toward building a transparent and efficient design protection system.
