On September 11, 2024, during the Third Belt and Road High-level Conference on Intellectual Property in Beijing, Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), discussed China’s focus on intellectual property (IP) protection and its recent advancements in science and technology. China's progress is evident in the latest WIPO Global Innovation Index, the country is listed among the top 100 global scientific and technological clusters. This development reflects an increased emphasis on research and development and a blending of digital and industrial innovation.
The Director General noted China’s active role in WIPO initiatives, such as WIPO Green, which facilitates the exchange of green technologies. He also pointed to China’s substantial growth in IP applications over the past 50 years, both domestically and internationally. This growth is complemented by China’s engagement in WIPO negotiations and global IP discussions, including the Belt and Road Initiative, which supports international IP cooperation.
Looking ahead, Daren Tang identified a key challenge for China and other countries: translating scientific advancements into marketable products and effectively utilizing IP tools such as trademarks, designs, and geographical indications. He reiterated WIPO’s commitment to supporting this process through training and practical IP skills development.
Daren Tang noted that intellectual property is essential for achieving broader economic, social, and cultural objectives, including job creation and investment.
