IN 2022 CNIPA IDENTIFIED 955,000 ABNORMAL PATENT APPLICATIONS

On June 5, 2023, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) released the 2022 Annual Report of the China National Intellectual Property Administration, which includes statistics on patent applications filed in 2022.
In 2022, CNIPA identified 955,000 abnormal patent applications (17% more than in 2021) and 372,100 malicious trademark registrations (slightly less than in 2021). As a total of 5,365,000 patent applications, including inventions, utility models and designs, were filed in 2022, almost 18% of patent applications in 2022 were anomalous (assuming that the total number of applications filed includes anomalous applications and these have not been removed from the statistics).
Patent prosecution
- The number of patent applications for inventions in China was 1.619 million, an increase of 2.1% over the previous year;
- the number of approved invention patents granted was 798,000, an increase of 14.7% over the previous year;
- the number of utility model patent applications was 2.951 million, an increase of 3.5% over the previous year.
Trademark prosecution
- The number of trademark applications was 7.516 million, a decrease of 20.5% from the previous year;
- the number of trademark registrations was 6.177 million, a decrease of 20.2% from the previous year;
- the average examination period for trademark registration applications remained at 4 months and the general trademark registration period remained stable at 7 months.
